Statement of Intent

At Cockfield Primary School PSHE forms an integral part of children’s learning. It gives them the tools to understand themselves, each other and the wider world as well as enabling them to interact with the world around them. Our PSHE curriculum helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage life’s challenges and make the most of life’s opportunities, helping them to flourish in their journey through life. Through our curriculum we aim to impact both academic and non-academic outcomes and is closely linked to our ethos – Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 1 Peter 3:8. As they move through the school and the PSHE topics children take part in discussions that promote our school values of compassion, respect and friendship and perseverance.

Our high quality PSHE curriculum develops skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of five core themes: friends and relationships; health (including food, drugs, alcohol and tobacco and first aid); online safety; mental wellbeing and RSE. All teachers ensure that every child has equal opportunities and is challenged within their own sphere of attainment. PSHE is taught in a way which builds in chances for children to experience different beliefs and backgrounds that they may not otherwise come into contact within our rural setting. It has also been designed to focus on real-life experiences and understanding of different social scenarios. Our discussion-based curriculum means that all learners have an equal chance to succeed, regardless of language gaps or writing attainment. Moving forward, we aim to foster a greater interaction with the wider school and village community.
