Statement of Intent

At Cockfield Primary School we recognise that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. We are also aware of the links between a child’s exposure to music and their reading fluency. It is our aim to provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy a range of different music styles. We teach music to develop the skills needed to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms and begin to think critically about them, sharing their views with respect skills. These are skills which they will also be able to take forward into future learning and help them to develop their interpersonal communication skills. We promote the British values of diversity and tolerance through looking at a range of styles and traditions in music around the world. Across our music lessons, teachers promote our school values of perseverance and creativity by giving every child the opportunity to create their own pieces and encouraging them to challenge themselves no matter their starting point. Over the course of their time at Cockfield, children are given opportunities understand and explore how music is created, use their voices and a range of tuned and untuned instruments. Moving forward with this subject we would like to increase the breadth of musical styles children have the opportunity to explore as well as the types of instruments they can play.
