Statement of Intent

At Cockfield CEVC Primary School it is our aim to empower pupils to be able to develop a love of learning languages and develop an understanding of how languages work.  We teach French in Key Stage 2 in line with National Curriculum requirements. In KS1 simple French vocabulary is introduced verbally within cross-curricular areas.  French is taught as a two year rolling programme using the CUSP – Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership – curriculum materials.

By the end of Key Stage Two pupils should have achieved the National Curriculum aims for pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

In addition to our curriculum aims, it is our intent that language curriculum at Cockfield Primary School will help the children to:

  • Foster an interest in learning other languages
  • Have a deeper awareness of cultural similarities and differences with other countries.
  • Develop their speaking and listening skills
